If you have any knowledge of hip-hop it seems there’s a chance you’ve heard of Cyamande.

This lesser known South London band made hits that have been sampled by the likes of Soul II Soul, De La Soul and MC Solaar.

Now comes a documentary to tell you exactly who they are, how they started and where they’ve got to now.

Their story is told on screen for for the first time, with tributes from musicians and producers influenced by their music, including Mark Ronson, Norman Jay, Jazzie B, DJ Maseo of De La Soul, Jim James and Louie Vega.

This documentary is a music nerd’s dream and I am sure if you like music at all you will want to check this band out by the end if you haven’t heard of them already.

Their journey charts the racial tensions of black, particularly Jamaican, people in Britain and touches on some of the dark reasons you may not have heard of this band before.

Bringing you stumbling into the light of their music, its rediscovery and re-birth in hip-hop culture in America and to a pleasing and hopeful conclusion.

If you are a struggling artist this documentary should make you smile and if you’re just a music lover it might just introduce you to another band to love.

Getting it back: The story of Cyamande had its UK premiere on 13 October 2022.
