Hm, I'm of the mind that if a relationship isn't working in the early stages it is never going to work. Sure love requires work to a certain extent, but if there isn't something to work from then there is no point. I haven't read Fromm, from what you have written I don't think I would enjoy it. Maybe I believe in the mystic side of love more...
