I appreciate a lot of this sentiment, but perhaps I drew slightly different lessons.

I am not arguing for inertia or dependence on a fabled hero. I just think giving wake-up calls has a lot to do with timing and compassion as well as grim reality.

Sometimes all anyone ever gets is a life long wake-up call. In other words, the problem is not always that they are asleep.
