Lindsey Hilsum was the first in a dizzying array of guest speakers tackling some of the big political, social and environmental challenges of our time.

The Conversation seeks to explore conflict and empathy, inequality and power, climate crisis and wonder through storytelling and action in this series of talks.

Other speakers for later events include David Spiegelhalter, Robert MacFarlane, Maggie Aderin-Pocock, Hanif Kureishi, Asne Seierstad, Tom Holland and Fergal Keane.

The first half of the evening is an hour-long interview with the notable guest speaker.

In Lindsey Hilsum’s case this was showcased with the help of oration from Lisa Dwan who did considerable justice to the weight and poignancy of the female poets she was reciting.

While Hilsum wove in stories told with a mixture of humour and gravity behind the people and poets that had been compiled in the book.

The evening included a book signing of I Brought the War with Me: Stories and Poems from the Front Line.

This introduction to the series of talks to continue and enrich debate and understanding of complex and difficult topics will take some beating.

The Conversation at St Martin-in-the-Fields runs from 14 January until 6 May — Tickets £15, or watch online for £10 www.stmartin-in-the-fields.org/the-conversation.
